The Delhi government is exploring plans to introduce seven-seater electric vans to enhance last-mile connectivity in areas where conventional buses cannot operate.

Officials from the transport department mentioned that the initiative is in its preliminary stage, with the government aiming to invite operators and EV manufacturers to suggest suitable vehicle models.

The vans, operating on lower fares than existing shared transport services, will function as feeder services with multiple pick-up and drop-off points, connecting residential neighborhoods, Metro stations, and major bus corridors.This move is expected to address connectivity gaps in unauthorised colonies, village clusters, and densely populated areas with narrow roads.Additionally, the initiative aims to regulate the rapid increase of e-rickshaws by introducing a structured permit-based feeder service.

The proposal aligns with Delhi's broader efforts to strengthen last-mile connectivity through electric mobility, including the DEVi programme and the EV Policy 2026.Experts highlight that electrifying paratransit services can reduce local pollution while expanding affordable transport access.The plan requires amendments to existing commercial vehicle permit norms before implementation.
