House Rules Committee Blocks Vote on Amendment to Limit US-Israel Military Cooperation, Drawing Criticism
A whistleblower from the U.S.Department of Justice is calling on the Senate Judiciary Committee to investigate whether Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche complied with federal records laws during his tenure.
The concerns were raised in a letter shared by former DOJ attorney Liz Oyer, who was recently fired after refusing to bypass a vetting process related to restoring firearm rights for actor Mel Gibson following a domestic violence conviction.
Oyer’s letter, which is also connected to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request currently in litigation, claims that the Department of Justice has been unable to locate any records related to her termination, even though she says such documents should exist under federal law.
According to her statements, DOJ FOIA staff reported that searches of Blanche’s files produced no documents, including even the memo that officially confirmed her dismissal.
This absence of records has raised concerns about whether proper documentation practices are being followed within the office of the Acting Attorney General.
Oyer urged lawmakers to examine whether Blanche may have used communication channels that bypass official recordkeeping requirements, potentially limiting transparency and oversight.
She also referenced broader concerns about record preservation practices within senior DOJ leadership, citing reporting suggesting that some officials have used nontraditional or ephemeral messaging platforms for official communications. The issue has drawn attention in the context of Blanche’s pending confirmation process for the permanent role of Attorney General.
The allegations do not constitute a formal finding of wrongdoing, but they have prompted calls for congressional scrutiny into compliance with the Federal Records Act and related transparency obligations within the Department of Justice.
