Eight workers killed in Sikkim tunnel collapse following landslide and suspected gas leak

A tragic incident occurred in Namchi district of Sikkim on Monday when a landslide triggered the collapse of an under-construction tunnel, resulting in eight worker fatalities.The National Hydroelectric Power Corporation's Teesta Stage VI Hydroelectric Project site was hit by the disaster, trapping around 27 workers.

Rescue operations faced challenges due to a suspected gas leak from disturbed underground strata, causing dizziness and unconsciousness among rescue teams.

Despite ongoing efforts by the National Disaster Response Force, State Disaster Response Force, Namchi Police, and Fire and Emergency Services, eight bodies have been recovered and shifted to local hospitals.
