Eleven NHS staff dismissed and fourteen sanctioned for accessing stabbing victims’ medical records

Nottingham University Hospitals Foundation Trust has dismissed 11 staff members and sanctioned 14 others for improperly accessing the medical records of victims from the June 2023 Nottingham stabbing attacks. The victims included students Barnaby Webber and Grace O'Malley-Kumar, and school caretaker Ian Coates, who were killed by Valdo Calocane. The investigation, begun in early 2025, also examined whether surviving victims' records were accessed inappropriately.Staff involved ranged from doctors and nurses to administrative personnel.Following the investigation, two staff received initial written warnings, 12 were given final written warnings, and 11 were dismissed. The trust has notified relevant professional regulators, the police, and the Information Commissioner’s Office.

Calocane, who suffers from paranoid schizophrenia, received an indefinite hospital order after pleading guilty to manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility.A public inquiry into the attacks revealed failures in NHS mental health services that might have prevented them.

Dr Manjeet Shehmar, NUH medical director, apologised to the families, emphasising the seriousness of unauthorised access to medical records and reaffirming the trust’s commitment to taking appropriate action.

The trust has stated it will continue to review disciplinary procedures where care errors occurred, while stressing that most staff adhere to proper patient confidentiality protocols.
