A western lowland gorilla named Olympia at Seattle’s Woodland Park Zoo has given birth to a healthy baby boy following an extremely rare emergency caesarean section.
The intervention was carried out on 24 May after veterinarians detected complications during labour, including low amniotic fluid and signs that the birth was not progressing naturally.
Concerned for both mother and baby, the zoo’s veterinary team made the decision to place Olympia under anaesthesia and call in a volunteer obstetrical team experienced in human births to assist with the procedure. The surgery marked the first ever gorilla C-section in the zoo’s 126-year history. The newborn, weighing around 5 pounds 4 ounces, is Olympia’s second son and is reported to be recovering well.Zoo staff described the collaboration between veterinarians and human medical professionals as crucial in ensuring a successful outcome.
Following the operation, Olympia required time to recover, during which another gorilla, Jamani, who had recently given birth herself, began caring for the newborn. The two gorillas share a history of cooperative infant-rearing, having previously raised their young together in another zoo setting.Jamani has since been observed nursing and carrying Olympia’s baby while the mother recuperates nearby.Zoo officials say the first 72 hours of a newborn gorilla’s life are critical, but both infants appear stable and healthy so far.
The current plan is to allow Jamani to continue assisting with care while Olympia regains strength, with the intention of gradually reuniting mother and baby when appropriate.Staff remain cautiously optimistic about the situation, noting that close monitoring will continue during this fragile period.
