Enbridge starts $4 billion natural gas pipeline project in British Columbia

Enbridge has commenced construction on the Sunrise Expansion Program, a $4 billion initiative to expand its West Coast Natural Gas pipeline system. The project, which began with a ceremony in Prince George, will add up to 300 million cubic feet per day of transportation capacity for natural gas in British Columbia.

Federal Energy and Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson emphasized the project's role in supporting industrial sectors and ensuring energy security as LNG export facilities come online. The expansion includes five 42-inch diameter pipeline loops along the existing system, stretching from Chetwynd to the Canada-U.S.border.It is expected to create 2,500 jobs, including for Indigenous communities, and generate $700 million in tax revenue over 35 years.Enbridge CEO Greg Ebel noted the project will be completed by late 2028, using 100% Canadian steel. The initiative also involves collaboration with First Nations, who hold a 12.5% ownership stake in the pipeline system. While critics have raised concerns about environmental impacts, the government highlights its economic benefits and energy security advantages.
