Enbridge Sunrise Pipeline Expansion Begins Near Prince George, Boosting Regional Economy

The Enbridge Sunrise pipeline expansion project has officially started near Prince George, British Columbia, marking a significant step in Canada's energy infrastructure development.

Federal Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson announced the $4-billion project, which was approved by the Canadian government just three months prior, is now underway. The expansion involves extending the existing West Coast natural gas pipeline and constructing 139 km of new pipeline between Chetwynd and the U.S.border, with 11 looping segments. The project, owned by Enbridge and 38 First Nations, aims to connect northern B.C.'s abundant natural gas reserves to southern markets.Resource Works' Stewart Muir highlighted the project's scale, noting it uses the largest diameter pipes available. The pipeline will be manufactured in Saskatchewan, creating approximately 2,500 jobs in B.C., including 1,300 in the Prince George region. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2028, providing a much-needed economic boost to the area.

However, the announcement comes amid challenges for the forestry sector, as Canfor recently announced the closure of the Northwood pulp mill in Prince George, affecting 300 jobs. The federal government has pledged $2 billion to support the industry, but concerns remain about the sustainability of regional economic pathways.
