England’s national football team is set to stay in the US state of Kansas during the upcoming World Cup, basing themselves in an area commonly referred to as ‘tornado alley’.
The squad will be accommodated at the Inn at Meadowbrook in Prairie Village, Kansas, where they will receive briefings on how to respond in the event of severe weather, including tornadoes.June marks peak tornado season in the region, with meteorologists warning that multiple twisters can occur during this period.
Players will be instructed on safety procedures, including locating storm shelters within the hotel and, in extreme situations, taking cover in their rooms away from windows. The team is due to travel to the United States ahead of friendly matches in Florida before moving to Kansas on 13 June. They are scheduled to play their first World Cup match against Croatia in Dallas on 17 June.
Off the pitch, the squad will also experience local culture, including attending a Kansas City Royals baseball game and visiting a well-known barbecue restaurant.Separately, controversy has intensified over FIFA’s ticket pricing strategy for the tournament.
US Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove has accused FIFA of ‘price gouging’ and has called for FIFA President Gianni Infantino to testify before Congress. She claims that dynamic pricing has made tickets unaffordable for many fans and has described the system as lacking transparency.
The issue has already prompted a letter signed by dozens of US representatives and is reportedly under scrutiny by state prosecutors in New York and New Jersey. The congresswoman has also urged greater accountability from FIFA, arguing that the focus should remain on fans rather than commercial interests.
