Erdogan seeks extradition of coup suspects as UK rejects Turkey's demands

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has renewed calls for the extradition of individuals he alleges were involved in a failed coup attempt against his government in 2016.

The request, made during a NATO summit, targets countries allegedly harboring members of the so-called Fethullah Terrorist Organisation (FETO), which Ankara blames for the coup.Over 250 people died and 2,200 were injured during the July 2016 coup attempt, which involved rogue soldiers seizing control of key institutions.

Erdogan's government has since detained hundreds of thousands of people suspected of ties to FETO, a movement designated as a terrorist group by Turkey.

However, British courts have previously rejected extradition requests, citing concerns over potential ill-treatment in Turkey, where press freedom and political rights have declined. The UK does not recognize FETO as a terrorist group, and Erdogan has accused some nations of covertly supporting the organization.

The case highlights ongoing tensions between Turkey and Western allies over human rights and political freedoms, with Erdogan emphasizing Turkey's role as a regional mediator despite criticisms of its authoritarian tendencies.
