Lily Collins films romantic beach scene in Mykonos for final season of Emily in Paris
The Netflix series ‘The Boroughs’, created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews and executive produced by the Duffer Brothers, follows residents of a retirement community who become entangled in a disturbing mystery involving underground creatures and a figure known as Mother.Across its six episodes, the residents initially believe Mother is responsible for a series of strange deaths and attacks. However, as the story progresses, the true nature of the threat is revealed.By the final episodes, it emerges that subterranean creatures are feeding on elderly residents.More shockingly, the retirement community’s executives, Blaine and Anneliese Shaw, have been exploiting these creatures for decades. They use the creatures’ blood to extract a restorative substance that grants them prolonged youth.
Rather than being the villain, Mother is revealed to be a captive being, forced into this cycle of exploitation, with her offspring compelled to attack residents to sustain the Shaws’ experiments.Sam, played by Alfred Molina, uncovers this truth through psychic visions of his deceased wife and insights from another patient. In the climax, Wally helps smuggle Mother out of a laboratory while other residents free her offspring.
A confrontation at Sam’s house sees the use of a wall of old televisions, whose light frequency destabilises the creatures and leads to Anneliese’s disintegration, while Blaine is severely weakened. In the resolution, Mother heals the injured Judy and reunites with her offspring in a cave.In a final act of devastation and release, she unleashes a powerful energy burst that kills both herself and Blaine.
Sam survives the ordeal and later finds closure, celebrating with his family and friends, while the community is left to reckon with the aftermath of the Shaws’ exploitation.
The ending reframes the series’ central conflict, shifting sympathy towards Mother and highlighting themes of exploitation, ageing, and ethical abuse of power.
