The federal government of Canada has suspended plans to expand Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, citing concerns over public space, housing, noise, and environmental impacts.

Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon announced that Ottawa's focus will remain on approved runway safety enhancements, ending discussions about expanding the airport to accommodate larger aircraft.The decision follows a consultation process that received over 87,000 responses, with public feedback influencing the federal decision.

MacKinnon emphasized that the government will not pursue plans that threaten public spaces like Little Norway Park or Hanlan’s Point Beach, increase noise levels, or hinder Toronto’s housing development.Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow praised the federal intervention, calling it a victory for residents who advocated against the expansion.The Ontario government, however, remains supportive of the project, arguing it could boost the economy by up to $8.5 billion annually and create thousands of jobs.

The Toronto Port Authority confirmed it will proceed with the Runway End Safety Areas project, while Ontario’s Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria urged future plans to address environmental and community concerns.

The expansion, which was never formally approved, faced opposition from residents worried about its impact on the city’s waterfront and quality of life.
