The Nigerian federal government has unveiled a $1.07 billion initiative aimed at strengthening primary healthcare centres (PHCs), improving education systems, and enhancing governance structures.
The program, backed by the World Bank, focuses on revitalizing healthcare infrastructure, expanding access to maternal and newborn care, and modernizing health services.Key achievements include the restoration of 3,026 PHCs nationwide and the supply of critical equipment to 231 secondary hospitals.
The reforms under the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative (NHSRII) emphasize four pillars: strengthening governance, equitable healthcare access, developing the healthcare value chain, and enhancing health security.
Over 43,417 women and newborns have been transported through rural emergency services, while 42,970 comprehensive obstetric care services were delivered between October 2024 and March 2026.The initiative also promotes modern family planning and vaccine uptake, reflecting renewed public confidence in the healthcare system.
Collaboration among federal, state, and local governments, alongside private sector and civil society partners, is critical to sustaining these reforms. The program aims to improve health outcomes for mothers, children, and vulnerable populations while ensuring accountability in the health sector.
