The Nigerian federal government has unveiled a comprehensive plan to revitalize the struggling textile industry, focusing on Kaduna's Kakuri textile hub.

The initiative, part of the National Cotton Textile and Garment Industrial Transformation Program, aims to restore the sector's former glory by modernizing infrastructure, creating jobs, and reducing reliance on imports.

Key strategies include developing policies to attract private investment, collaborating with stakeholders to boost local cotton production, and providing affordable financing for SMEs.The program is structured in four phases, with the first phase already completed.Challenges like high electricity costs and smuggling are being addressed through gas-powered energy solutions and a dedicated task force.

Kaduna State officials emphasized the potential for job creation and the importance of restoring the textile value chain to revive the region's agrarian economy.

Stakeholders highlighted the need for coordinated efforts in policy, infrastructure, and energy to position Nigeria as an African hub for textile manufacturing.
