Federal Judge Halts Kennedy Center Renovation Plan as Trump Criticizes Ruling and Legal Challenges

President Donald Trump publicly criticized a federal judge after a court ruling blocked his proposed renovation and temporary closure of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.U.S.

District Judge Christopher Cooper issued a decision halting the planned overhaul, which was expected to last about two years and would have significantly reshaped the institution.

The judge also ordered that Trump’s name be removed from the center, stating that only Congress has the authority to change its official designation, which honors President John F.Kennedy.

In response, Trump used his Truth Social platform to denounce the ruling, calling the judge biased and suggesting that he has faced repeated unfair treatment in the courts. He also linked the decision to other legal setbacks, including previous Supreme Court rulings against some of his policies.Trump further suggested, without providing evidence, that personal and political connections involving the judge’s family influenced the outcome.

Following the ruling, Trump indicated he would step back from the renovation project and consider transferring control of the Kennedy Center to Congress. The administration has not clarified whether he would continue serving as the center’s board chairman after the change in direction.

The court’s decision also addressed the governance of the Kennedy Center, stating that the board exceeded its authority in approving certain actions related to the renovation and naming decisions. The ruling temporarily stops the planned closure and renovation while legal and administrative issues are reviewed.

Meanwhile, some artists and cultural advocates have expressed optimism that the institution could return to a more traditional, nonpartisan governance model if the court’s order is fully implemented.
