A federal judge in Virginia has ruled that certain restrictions imposed by the Biden administration on the abortion medication mifepristone are unlawful.The decision, issued by U.S.

District Judge Robert Ballou in Charlottesville, states that the FDA failed to justify the necessity of the 2023 requirements, despite repeated affirmations of the drug's safety and effectiveness.

The ruling stems from a 2023 lawsuit filed by three abortion providers, who argued that the restrictions unnecessarily complicated access to the drug.While Judge Ballou can compel the FDA to reconsider the rule, he cannot strike it down under current federal law.The FDA, which is conducting a broader safety review of mifepristone under the Trump administration, has not yet commented on the ruling.

This decision comes amid ongoing efforts by Republican-led states and anti-abortion groups to limit access to mifepristone, which is used in over 60% of U.S.abortions.The Supreme Court previously allowed a Biden-era mail-order rule for mifepristone to remain in effect, pending a legal challenge.
