FG clarifies no electricity tariff hike, confirms subsidy support continues

The federal government has officially denied reports of an imminent electricity tariff increase, stating that no rate hike is planned for any consumer band.

Sadiq Wanka, the President's special adviser on Power Infrastructure, clarified that recent media coverage misinterpreted his remarks at an industry event in Lagos. The government remains committed to protecting vulnerable households through continued subsidy support.

The National Integrated Electricity Policy, finalized in December 2024, outlines a gradual shift toward cost-reflective pricing, currently limited to Band A customers.

For other bands, subsidies will stay intact, with efforts focused on improving efficiency and targeting support through the Power Consumer Assistance Fund.

The statement emphasized transparency in subsidy delivery and boosting investor confidence in the power sector, which has faced challenges like underinvestment and currency mismatches.

The government also praised media platforms like Asharami Square for helping journalists explain complex policies, urging continued media support for national development.
