Nigeria moves to tighten border health measures amid renewed Ebola outbreak concerns in DR Congo
The Federal Government has upgraded and inaugurated an expanded Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) in Katsina State as part of efforts to improve public health emergency response across the state.
The facility, which was initially set up mainly for polio emergency coordination, has now been expanded to handle a wider range of health emergencies including disease outbreaks, immunisation coordination, and surveillance activities.
The upgrade was delivered through the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) in collaboration with international partners such as the Gates Foundation and eHealth Africa.During the inauguration ceremony held in Katsina, the Executive Secretary of the Katsina State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr.
Shamsudeen Yahaya, explained that the centre is designed to improve coordination during health emergencies and strengthen the overall healthcare response system in the state.
According to him, the expanded centre is equipped with modern communication tools and operational systems that will support rapid response during outbreaks.
It also provides stable electricity, internet connectivity, and a proper working environment for health professionals, emergency teams, and development partners.
He further noted that the upgrade became necessary due to increasing demand for a more coordinated and efficient approach to managing public health challenges beyond polio eradication alone.
The facility is expected to enhance real-time disease surveillance, improve immunisation planning, and strengthen rapid response mechanisms during health crises.Officials say this development will significantly boost Katsina State’s capacity to handle future outbreaks and improve healthcare delivery overall.
The project is also part of initiatives being showcased during activities marking the third anniversary of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, highlighting ongoing investments in Nigeria’s primary healthcare system.
