Gianni Infantino, President of FIFA, has indicated that the organisation may consider expanding the World Cup to 64 teams ahead of the 2030 tournament, which will be hosted across Spain, Portugal, and Morocco.

This follows the successful implementation of the 48-team format during the recent World Cup, which saw increased participation from nations across all continents.

Infantino argued that expanding the tournament would provide smaller countries with the incentive to improve their football standards, as evidenced by the inclusion of teams like Cape Verde and Jordan.

However, some football federations, including Uefa and Concacaf, have expressed concerns that further expansion could dilute the quality of play and disrupt the existing qualifying process.

Despite these reservations, Infantino defended the changes, citing high-quality performances from all teams and the financial success of the tournament, which is projected to generate 13-14 billion Swiss francs.The debate over the World Cup's expansion continues as FIFA prepares to make a final decision.
