Retiring Postie's Kindness Highlights Civilisation's Foundations
A mother has shared a powerful account of how the kindness and quick thinking of five teenagers helped her family during a frightening accident at a local park. She had taken her two young sons, aged five and seven, to ride scooters around a park despite light rain.
Her eldest son, who has cerebral palsy, used a specially modified scooter that allowed him to ride with her, giving him the opportunity to enjoy the activity alongside other children. While riding through a puddle, the scooter lost traction and both fell to the ground. After the fall, she realised her eldest son was unconscious.Without a phone and overwhelmed with panic, she called out for help. The only people nearby were a group of five teenagers sheltering from the rain. They immediately responded without hesitation.
One called an ambulance, another chased after her younger son, who had run away in fear, while two others waited at the park entrance to direct emergency services to the correct location.
The fifth teenager, a young girl, brought blankets to keep the mother and child warm and comforted the distressed mother by holding her and reassuring her that she was doing a great job.The boy later regained consciousness at hospital and fortunately made a full recovery.
Reflecting on the experience, the mother said the teenagers' compassion, calmness and maturity challenged common negative stereotypes about young people. She continues to remember the comfort offered by the girl who stayed with her during one of the most frightening moments of her life.
