Three suspects face bail hearing in R15m gemstone theft case
A former Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) official, known as Witness K, has been arrested in connection with an alleged theft of precious stones worth nearly R15 million during a raid on a property in Killarney, Johannesburg, in 2023.
The suspect is currently being held at Germiston holding cells and is expected to appear in the Johannesburg magistrate’s court on Monday, July 17, 2026.
Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) spokesperson Lizzy Suping confirmed that Witness K was one of two remaining suspects under investigation. The case initially involved six suspects, including officials from multiple police departments and a private citizen.
One suspect has since died, while others faced charges related to unauthorized investigations, jurisdictional violations, and impersonation of police officers during the raid.
Three other accused individuals appeared in court earlier this week, with Kersha Stoltz and Adriaan McKenzie granted bail, while charges against Etienne van der Walt were withdrawn after his representations to the prosecution. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue probing the alleged misconduct and criminal activities linked to the case.
