US Defence Secretary urges stronger allied defence spending while praising Australia’s increased commitment
Mark Esper, former US Secretary of Defence under Donald Trump, has stated that the US expects Australia to support it in the event of a Chinese attack on Taiwan.
In an interview at the GLOBSEC forum in Prague, Esper said the potential for conflict has been discussed between the two allies for years and highlighted ongoing US military rotations in the Northern Territory as part of strategic preparations.
Esper urged Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and other Indo-Pacific leaders to publicly declare their readiness to defend Taiwan, similar to statements made by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. He stressed that regional partners would be crucial for basing, overflight rights, and logistical support during any conflict.
Esper’s comments sparked debate in Australia, with former Home Affairs Secretary Mike Pezzullo arguing that public statements like these could be counterproductive, emboldening Taiwan while putting pressure on China without clear US commitment.
The issue reflects the broader strategic ambiguity maintained by the US regarding Taiwan, although the island continues to strengthen ties with Washington.
Esper emphasised the need for coherent signalling to Beijing that any aggression against Taiwan would involve multiple democracies in the Indo-Pacific, not just the US and Taiwan.
