Norman Seeff Captures Early Moments of Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe in New York
In 1978, legendary Chicano photographer George Rodriguez captured intimate portraits of a 12-year-old Janet Jackson, providing a rare glimpse into the early life of the future pop superstar. At this time, Janet was establishing her career independently from her famous siblings, including Michael and La Toya Jackson.
She had already made her television debut at the age of 10 on a CBS variety show, performing musical numbers, dancing, and participating in comedy sketches.
Her acting talent became even more evident when producer Norman Lear cast her as Penny Gordon Woods on the sitcom 'Good Times' (1977–1979), a role that tackled sensitive issues of child abuse and demonstrated her emotional depth.Following this, Janet starred as Jojo Ashton in the ABC sitcom 'A New Kind of Family' (1979), solidifying her presence on network television.
These photographs by Rodriguez not only document a critical transitional phase in Janet’s career but also reflect the cultural and artistic environment of the 1970s, highlighting her emerging identity as a performer beyond her family’s fame.
