Gold Smuggling Attempt Foiled by Police at Inter-State Checkpost

The police intercepted and seized approximately 700 grams of gold during a routine vehicle check at the Walayar inter-State checkpost. The incident involved Mohammed, a 65-year-old resident of Varavoor in Thrissur district, who was found carrying three melted gold bars and two gold bangles while traveling in a Kerala State Road Transport Corporation bus bound for Coimbatore.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the gold items were part of old ornaments melted at Mohammed's son Najmudeen's jewellery workshop in Thrissur.

The gold was being transported from Kerala to Tamil Nadu, but as Mohammed failed to produce valid documents for transporting the gold articles, the police seized the items for further investigation. The seized property has been handed over to the Income Tax Department for subsequent legal proceedings. This incident highlights the ongoing challenges of cross-state smuggling and the vigilance of law enforcement in intercepting such activities.

Authorities emphasized that proper documentation is essential for legitimate transportation of valuable goods, and any attempt to circumvent these regulations will be met with strict action.
