Google has announced significant updates to its Google Vids platform, transforming it into a comprehensive AI video creation tool. The update allows users to create personalized digital avatars that mimic their appearance and voice using a selfie and voice recording.
Additionally, the integration of Gemini Omni, Google's multi-modal AI model, enables users to generate videos by combining written prompts with uploaded reference images.
Omni can also perform tasks like background replacement, lighting adjustments, and adding effects, with support for step-by-step edits to refine videos without starting over.
These enhancements position Google Vids beyond its original role as a workplace presentation tool, expanding its utility for business applications such as company updates and training videos. However, the platform now competes with other AI video tools like HeyGen and Synthesia, offering personalized avatars and conversational edits.
Access to personal avatars is restricted to users aged 18+ in specific regions, with avatars tied to Google accounts and watermarked with SynthID to prevent misuse. The updates reflect Google's strategic push into AI-driven content creation while addressing privacy and ethical concerns.
