Government bans high-caffeine energy drinks for under-16s in England from April

The UK government has announced a ban on high-caffeine energy drinks for children under 16 in England, effective from April 2027.The regulation prohibits the sale of drinks containing more than 150mg of caffeine per litre to minors in shops, restaurants, cafes, vending machines, and online platforms.Lower-caffeine soft drinks like Diet Coke are exempt, as are tea and coffee.

The policy aims to address health concerns such as obesity, sleep disruption, anxiety, and poor academic performance linked to excessive caffeine consumption.Public Health Minister Sharon Hodgson emphasized the measure as a commitment to fostering the healthiest generation of children.Enforcement will be handled by local authorities, with fines of up to £2,500 for non-compliance.The decision follows a consultation with 1,100 responses supporting age restrictions.

While experts acknowledge the risks of caffeine to developing bodies, critics argue the ban is unnecessary, citing existing marketing restrictions and warning labels. The policy faces opposition from the British Soft Drinks Association, which claims the move undermines consumer choice.Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales are also considering similar measures. The regulation will be implemented via secondary legislation under the Food Safety Act 1990.
