The Indian government addressed concerns about E20 fuel (20% ethanol-blended petrol) in a parliamentary reply, stating there are no widespread or substantiated complaints linking the fuel to engine failures, fuel pump issues, corrosion, water contamination, or other vehicle performance problems.

Minister Suresh Gopi, in a written response to Rajya Sabha MP Dr John Brittas, highlighted that the Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) Programme has been implemented through a phased, scientifically validated process involving NITI Aayog, automobile manufacturers, Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs), and technical institutions like ARAI and SIAM.

The government emphasized that extensive laboratory studies, field trials, and real-world data confirm E20 is safe for use under prescribed standards.

It also noted that over 20 crore two-wheelers and 3 crore petrol cars have operated on E15+ and E19-E20 blends without verified evidence of engine failure.The ministry clarified that OMCs have not issued advisories on water contamination, as ethanol-blended fuel complies with BIS standards.The EBP Programme has saved ₹1.97 lakh crore in foreign exchange and reduced carbon emissions by 952 lakh metric tonnes since 2014-15.The government reiterated that technical validation and monitoring confirm no widespread adverse impacts from E20 fuel.
