The Pakistani government has missed its July 1, 2026 deadline for notifying the biannual gas tariff, breaching an IMF structural benchmark under the $7bn Extended Fund Facility (EFF).

The delay, attributed to legal disputes over the appointment of Ogra chairman Nabeel Ahmad Awan and unresolved unaccounted-for-gas (UFG) reduction targets, has raised concerns about energy sector viability.Officials stated that the tariff determination is ready but faced resistance from the acting chairman, who demanded detailed CTS-specific targets.The government aims to address circular debt and UFG losses by improving infrastructure and tracking systems.While the IMF requires timely tariff adjustments to maintain macroeconomic stability, the delay highlights challenges in regulatory compliance.The Ogra has initiated a comprehensive dashboard to monitor circular debt, which reached Rs3.442tr by December 2025, and plans to roll out a new management plan for the gas sector.
