Government Plans New Multi-Sector Measures to Strengthen Wetland Protection Across Tanzania

The Tanzanian government has announced a new approach to address the ongoing problem of wetland encroachment after acknowledging that the existing legal framework has not been enough to protect these important ecosystems.

Despite laws that prohibit illegal settlement, farming and development in wetlands, unauthorized activities have continued in many parts of the country, especially in urban and peri-urban areas where demand for land has increased significantly.

Officials say the new strategy will go beyond relying only on legislation by combining stronger enforcement, improved coordination among government institutions, better land-use planning and greater involvement of local communities.

The government also recognises that weak enforcement capacity, limited resources, overlapping institutional responsibilities and, in some cases, political interference have reduced the effectiveness of previous conservation efforts.

Wetlands are essential for Tanzania because they naturally filter water, help control floods, maintain groundwater supplies, support fisheries and provide habitats for many plant and animal species.

Environmental experts have repeatedly warned that continued degradation of these areas could threaten water security, biodiversity and climate resilience.

As part of the proposed measures, authorities are expected to promote community awareness programmes and explore alternative livelihood opportunities for people who depend on wetland resources, helping reduce pressure on these sensitive environments. The announcement reflects a broader regional effort to balance economic development with environmental conservation.

Although detailed implementation plans are still under discussion, the success of the initiative will depend on adequate funding, trained personnel, effective monitoring and meaningful participation from local communities and other stakeholders.

Environmental organisations and development partners will closely monitor whether these measures can slow or reverse the continued loss of Tanzania's wetlands.
