Governor Sakaja Announces Training for 2,500 Officers to Strengthen Nairobi Security

Governor Johnson Sakaja has announced plans to train 2,500 police officers from the Nairobi County Inspectorate and National Police Service to form a specialized Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit.

The initiative, under the Cooperation Agreement between national and county governments, aims to shift policing focus from traffic enforcement to enhanced security patrols and rapid response in Nairobi, a city with over seven million daytime residents.The new unit will be headquartered at Kamukunji Police Station, which will undergo rehabilitation and expansion.Nairobi will also implement an integrated citywide CCTV surveillance network linked to a new Traffic Management Centre (TMC) at City Cabanas.This system will integrate private CCTV cameras to improve crime detection and emergency response.Sakaja highlighted lessons learned from benchmarking visits to New York and London to modernize Nairobi’s security infrastructure.The reforms are part of efforts to modernize Nairobi’s security and enhance public safety.
