An 84-year-old grandmother, Pauline Shillito, was refused assistance by both her local pharmacy and GP after cutting her finger while preparing a melon.Despite the injury being minor, the wound bled heavily due to her blood-thinning medication.At Well Pharmacy, the pharmacist refused to help, stating, 'We don’t deal with blood,' and advised her to call emergency services.When she visited Orchard House GP Surgery, the receptionist claimed no nurse was on duty and also directed her to dial 999.Shillito expressed frustration, noting that an ambulance was unnecessary for a minor injury.A neighbor ultimately helped her by cleaning the wound and applying a plaster.The NHS clarified that 999 should only be used for life-threatening emergencies, while 111 is recommended for non-urgent cases.The incident highlights gaps in healthcare access for elderly individuals and the challenges of navigating emergency services for minor injuries.
