On May 5, 1965, the Grateful Dead, originally performing under the name The Warlocks, played their very first show at Magoo’s Pizza in Menlo Park, California.After discovering that another band already had the name, they later adopted the iconic name 'Grateful Dead' in December of that year.The original lineup featured Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Ron “Pigpen” McKernan, Phil Lesh, and Bill Kreutzmann.

Known for their unique blend of musical styles, the band fused rock, blues, jazz, folk, country, bluegrass, gospel, reggae, and world music, often adding psychedelic influences.They gained fame for their improvisational live performances and developed a devoted fan base called 'Deadheads.' Musician and writer Lenny Kaye has described their work as exploring musical territory few other bands reach.

The Grateful Dead are widely regarded as the pioneering forefathers of the jam band genre, influencing countless musicians and shaping the landscape of live improvisational rock music.
