Grizz Chapman, best known for his role in the NBC sitcom ‘30 Rock’, has died at the age of 52.His passing was confirmed by his representative, Saideh A Brown, on Friday, May 22, 2026.While no official cause of death has been disclosed, Chapman’s cousin stated on social media that he had been “fighting illness” for several years.Chapman was widely recognised for portraying Grizz, the childhood friend-turned-assistant of Tracy Jordan, played by Tracy Morgan.
His character was a recurring presence throughout the series, appearing in approximately 80 episodes from the show’s debut in 2006 until its conclusion in 2012.The role also connected him to Tina Fey’s character, Liz Lemon, making him a memorable part of the show’s ensemble cast.
Beyond ‘30 Rock’, Chapman’s acting credits included appearances in television series such as ‘The Blacklist’ and ‘Blue Bloods’, as well as a role in the Adam Sandler film ‘The Cobbler’.
He also created and starred in his own YouTube sketch series, ‘The Grizz Chronicles’, demonstrating his continued engagement with comedy and online content creation.
According to reports from the Associated Press, Chapman had undergone a kidney transplant in 2010 after previously requiring dialysis three times a week.He had initially been diagnosed with hypertension, which went untreated and later developed into kidney disease.
Following his transplant, he became an advocate and spokesperson for the National Kidney Foundation, using his experience to raise awareness of kidney health issues.Following the announcement of his death, tributes poured in from colleagues, fans, and friends.
