Haryana farmers and workers protest against government's power distribution reforms

Farmers, electricity employees, workers, and consumer organisations in Haryana have launched a statewide agitation against the government's proposal to grant a parallel electricity distribution licence in Gurugram and Nuh, create a separate Agri DISCOM, and implement smart metering across the state.

A joint platform called the Haryana Electricity Employees & Consumers Struggle Forum was formed to lead the movement, planning mass demonstrations in Nuh and Gurugram followed by district-level protests until August 8.

Leaders accused the government of attempting to privatise the public power distribution system, calling the measures 'anti-people and anti-employee'.They highlighted that the state's power network was built by over 8,000 employees and warned it would not be handed over to private companies.

Farmer leaders criticised Eleven Power Private Limited for allegedly mobilising consumers to support the parallel licence application, despite widespread objections from stakeholders, employees, and the Haryana power distribution utility. The Haryana Electricity Regulatory Commission (HERC) has formed a committee to review objections but faces pressure to reject the proposal. The agitation reflects deep concerns about losing public control over energy infrastructure and its impact on agricultural subsidies.
