Andy Warhol's Uncle Sam: A Photographic Portrait
The Titlis Tower, originally a functional 56-meter steel mast built by the Swiss postal service in the mid-1980s, has been transformed into an iconic alpine structure by Herzog and de Meuron.Located above Engelberg, the tower was never designed to be visually striking but became a landmark through its unique design.
The architects inserted two cantilevered glass-and-steel volumes crosswise into the existing mast, creating a cross-shaped silhouette that contrasts with the mountain landscape. The intervention includes four vertical circulation cores, a restaurant, bar, and exhibition space spanning over 3,000 meters of elevation.
Completed in 2026, this project exemplifies resource-conscious development, making the existing structure habitable and legible without competing with the natural environment.
The project is part of a broader summit masterplan, highlighting the importance of respecting and enhancing existing landmarks rather than erasing them.
