The House of Representatives Committee on Federal Character has condemned the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) Chairman, Dr.Zacch Adedeji, for disregarding the National Assembly's constitutional authority.

The committee ordered an immediate suspension of NRS recruitment, threatening to invoke Sections 88 and 89 of the Constitution to enforce its directives.These sections empower the National Assembly to investigate corruption and compel testimony.

The committee accused Adedeji of ignoring multiple legislative summons, including a request to submit a nominal roll of staff and appear before the committee.Previous letters from the committee were acknowledged by Adedeji's office but not acted upon.

The dispute involves recruitment waivers granted by the Federal Character Commission (FCC) to the NRS, which the committee claims violates its oversight responsibilities.The FCC Chairman, Hon.Hulayat Motunrayo Omidiran, was also absent from a recent meeting, prompting the committee to call her absence 'unacceptable'.

The committee emphasized that legislative oversight is non-negotiable and warned that continued defiance would erode public trust in democratic governance.

A Daily Trust investigation revealed that five out of six NRS Executive Directors were appointed without adhering to legal mandates on geopolitical zone representation.This led to a court case challenging the appointments, with the NRS, President, and Attorney General named as defendants.
