House GOP cancels scheduled votes amid internal party dispute over stalled legislation

House Republican leaders were forced to cancel a planned Friday voting session after an internal standoff within the party threatened to disrupt the chamber’s legislative schedule.

According to a notice sent to members, the decision came as GOP hard-liners blocked progress over the stalled SAVE America Act, an elections-related bill that remains stuck in the Senate.

The disagreement created enough friction to derail the planned end-of-week votes, with lawmakers originally expected to depart after a Thursday afternoon session. The disruption highlights growing tensions within the House Republican caucus, where factions have clashed over legislative priorities and strategy.

Speaker Mike Johnson was scheduled to meet with President Donald Trump in an effort to resolve the impasse and restore the House’s planned schedule for the following week.

Without an agreement, both the House and Senate could face an extended recess lasting into mid-July, raising concerns about reduced congressional productivity during a critical period leading up to the 2026 election season. The situation was further complicated by political maneuvering around related legislation.

Trump reportedly vowed to block a bipartisan affordable housing bill that had just passed Congress, declining to sign it and intensifying frustration among lawmakers. His involvement has added pressure to ongoing negotiations over the SAVE America Act, which Trump has described as a priority ahead of the midterms.Closed-door meetings among Republican senators reportedly grew tense as leadership attempted to rally support for moving the bill forward.

Overall, the episode underscores deep divisions within the Republican Party, as leadership struggles to maintain unity while advancing its legislative agenda amid competing priorities and external political pressure.

These guys can't even agree on what day it is! This whole thing just proves how hopelessly dysfunctional the GOP is right now. Blocking votes, fighting each other… it's a circus. And Trump pulling strings? No surprise there. Productivity's gonna suffer, that's for sure.
