Four-time Stanley Cup champion Claude Lemieux dies at 60
The Montreal Canadiens’ pursuit of a 25th Stanley Cup came to an end after a decisive 6–1 defeat to the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Final. With the victory, Carolina won the series 4–1 and secured a place in the Stanley Cup Final against the Vegas Golden Knights. The series began on a promising note for Montreal, who stunned the top-seeded Hurricanes with a 6–2 win in Raleigh in Game 1.
However, Carolina quickly regained control, responding with stronger defensive structure and more consistent scoring after an 11-day layoff following earlier playoff sweeps.
The Hurricanes then shifted momentum firmly in their favour, winning the next games, including two tight 3–2 overtime victories that placed Montreal under significant pressure.A critical turning point came in Game 4, when the Canadiens suffered a heavy 4–0 loss at home, leaving them on the brink of elimination.
In the deciding Game 5, Carolina dominated once again, outplaying Montreal in all areas and closing out the series in emphatic fashion with a 6–1 result.
Despite their exit, Montreal’s playoff run included impressive resilience earlier in the post-season, as they advanced through two demanding seven-game series against the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Buffalo Sabres.Ultimately, however, they were unable to maintain that level against a more dominant Hurricanes team. The defeat extends Canada’s Stanley Cup drought to 33 years, with the Canadiens last winning the championship in 1993.Carolina now moves forward to face Vegas, while Montreal is left to regroup after a deep but ultimately unsuccessful playoff campaign.
