Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (Idac) head Andrea Johnson has categorically denied allegations that the corruption case against police crime intelligence head Lt-Gen Dumisani Khumalo was politically motivated.

During testimony at the Madlanga commission of inquiry, Johnson rejected claims by KwaZulu-Natal provincial police commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi that the investigation into Khumalo's alleged misconduct aimed to delay serious organised crime inquiries.

Khumalo, leader of the KwaZulu-Natal political killings task team (PKTT), faces charges related to the employment of an unqualified civilian in a senior position within the police service.Johnson clarified that the probe was focused on Khumalo's role as divisional commissioner of crime intelligence, not his leadership of the PKTT.

She emphasized that her office was unaware of Khumalo's involvement with the PKTT at the time of the investigation and stressed that the case fell within Idac's mandate.

The controversy highlights tensions within South Africa's law enforcement agencies, with allegations of systemic corruption and political interference in police investigations.
