The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee issued an internal advisory warning students and staff against participating in political discussions or activities without prior permission, which has sparked controversy.

The circular, dated July 20, was shared on social media and criticized by Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra, who accused the institute of stifling free speech.

IIT Roorkee clarified that the advisory is part of its routine conduct rules, emphasizing that it is not a new policy but a standard practice to maintain institutional discipline.

The advisory prohibits students and employees from making statements that could harm relations between the institute and the Central Government or public entities.

Amid ongoing protests led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) demanding education reforms and the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, the institute stressed that the communication should not be misinterpreted.
