Immigration Expert Links Rising ICE Detention Suicides to Systemic Failures Under Trump Policies

A report highlighted growing concerns about conditions inside U.S.Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facilities during President Donald Trump’s administration.

According to an Associated Press investigation cited by ABC News, at least 10 detainees have died by suicide since Trump returned to office in January 2025.

The report noted that seven of those deaths occurred since October alone, making it the highest annual number of suicides recorded in ICE detention facilities.Historically, the agency typically reported one or no suicide deaths per year. One of the cases discussed involved Brayan Rayo Garzon, a detainee held in Missouri while suffering from COVID-19 symptoms. He was reportedly isolated from regular contact with his mother, whom he considered his primary emotional support. Before his death, he wrote a note to guards expressing concern that his mother was worried about him and asking to speak with her.The request was allegedly ignored, and he was later found unresponsive in his cell.Medical officials later ruled the death a suicide.

Aaron Reichlin-Melnick, a senior fellow at the American Immigration Council, argued that the increasing number of suicides reflects broader systemic problems within detention centers, including inadequate staffing, poor medical care, and insufficient mental health screening. He stated that many detention suicides are preventable when facilities follow proper protocols and maintain adequate support systems.

The article also noted ongoing legal disputes surrounding the administration’s immigration detention policies, including attempts to expand indefinite detention practices.

Some federal judges, including Trump-appointed judges, have reportedly ordered the release of certain detainees after finding aspects of the detentions legally questionable.
