Government explores legal options to deport Rochdale grooming gang leader amid release concerns
Recent reports from the Northumberland coast in north-east England indicate a noticeable rise in sightings of orcas, with wildlife observers and boat tour operators recording more frequent and closer encounters than in previous years.
Historically, orcas were only occasionally spotted far offshore, but in 2025 and 2026 they have been appearing nearer to the coast, often alongside a growing number of dolphins.
The Farne Islands, already known for seabird colonies such as puffins and guillemots, have become an unexpected hotspot for cetacean activity, attracting increased attention from tourists and wildlife enthusiasts.
Boat operator Andrew Douglas, who runs Serenity Boat Tours, described the experience of seeing orcas as highly emotional and memorable, noting the excitement among passengers and crew.
He suggested that recent environmental changes, including a government ban on sandeel fishing introduced around two years ago, may have contributed to improved marine conditions.
Sandeels are a key species at the base of the food chain, supporting fish such as mackerel and herring, which in turn attract larger predators like dolphins and orcas.According to this view, the recovery of fish stocks may be drawing more top predators closer to shore. However, marine scientists remain cautious about drawing firm conclusions.
Experts, including researchers from the Scottish Association for Marine Science and the University of St Andrews, have stated that there is no clear single explanation for the increase.
Possible factors include improved reporting through social media, changes in prey distribution, exploratory behaviour by highly mobile orca populations, or even fluctuations in regional population numbers. It is also noted that some UK orca populations face challenges linked to pollution and low reproductive success.Overall, researchers suggest that while the trend may be encouraging, more systematic study is needed.
Orcas are considered useful indicators of ecosystem health, but current data is insufficient to confirm whether the increase in sightings reflects a genuine long-term ecological improvement or a combination of environmental and observational factors.
