India and Afghanistan have agreed to establish a Joint Working Group to develop a long-term roadmap for cooperation in agriculture and livestock.The decision was made during bilateral talks between Union agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Afghanistan’s agriculture minister Mawlawi Ataullah Omari in New Delhi.

The group will focus on areas like seeds, irrigation, research, and agri-trade, with India offering support through advanced seed technologies, climate-resilient crops, and scientific expertise from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).Discussions also covered water management solutions such as micro-irrigation and rainwater harvesting to address water scarcity.Both nations aim to strengthen collaboration in agricultural research, education, and capacity building.Chouhan emphasized India’s commitment to aiding Afghanistan’s wheat productivity and shared its experience in sustainable farming practices.The partnership highlights the historical ties between the two countries and their focus on mutual development through agriculture.
