India summoned Iran's Deputy Chief of Mission in New Delhi, Mohammad Javad Hosseini, after an Indian crew member was killed in a missile strike on two United Arab Emirates (UAE) oil tankers transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) called in the Iranian envoy to register a formal diplomatic protest over the attack on commercial vessels navigating one of the world's most strategically important shipping routes near Oman.

According to reports, the tankers, identified as Mombasa and Al Bahiyah, were struck while passing through the southern channel of the strait, a vital maritime corridor that carries nearly one-fifth of global oil shipments during normal times.

The attack resulted in the death of one Indian sailor aboard the Mombasa and left eight others injured, including six Indian nationals and two Ukrainian crew members.Four of the injured were reported to be in serious condition.

The UAE Ministry of Defence stated that the missile strikes caused fires and significant material damage to both vessels, although the fires were later brought under control.

The incident marks another serious escalation in the ongoing West Asia conflict and has raised fresh concerns about the safety of international commercial shipping in the region.

With this latest casualty, the reported number of Indian nationals killed during the current conflict has risen to 11, including three Indian sailors who were killed last month in a separate strike on the Palau-flagged tanker MT Settebello.India is closely monitoring the situation while emphasising the safety of its citizens and the security of international maritime trade.
