Tragedy in Vietnam: Overloaded vessel sinks, killing 15 Indians
Several Indian tourists who were stranded in Vietnam after a fatal boat accident near Phu Quoc Island returned to Hyderabad on the night of July 12 and shared their experiences of the tragedy.Mahipal Sanghvi, a resident of Vijayawada, said he was part of a group of around 80 tourists that had travelled to Vietnam on July 8.While he remained on the island during the water activity, he learnt that a nearby tourist boat had overturned in rough waters.Rescue teams brought victims back to the shore, where fellow tourists attempted to administer CPR, but many could not be saved.Family members gathered at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport to receive their relatives after an anxious wait.
Another survivor, Ganesh from Hyderabad, said the overall tour included many visitors from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and appreciated the support provided by the Andhra Pradesh government following the incident.
Srinivas, from West Godavari district, said his separate group narrowly escaped the accident because they were waiting for their own boat when the vessel ahead capsized.He recalled witnessing the strong water currents that made the conditions dangerous.Rameshwar Pradhan explained that about 105 people were travelling in the broader tour, divided across three boats.According to him, the first boat lost control after travelling around one kilometre and overturned while carrying 34 people.Some passengers were rescued, while others fell into the water.Two injured tourists remained in critical condition in a local hospital.Survivors also praised the prompt response of the Vietnamese naval rescue teams and the assistance provided by the Indian Embassy.While 17 members of the tour group returned to Hyderabad, efforts were continuing to support those who remained in Vietnam.
