Information Minister Attaullah Tarar announced that security agencies had arrested a man allegedly involved in running an online disinformation campaign against Pakistan in exchange for funding from India.

According to the minister, the suspect was working in digital marketing services and investigators allegedly discovered links between his business activities and contacts in India.

Tarar claimed that the suspect received payments from Indian sources to promote anti-state content targeting Pakistan, its security institutions, the government, the armed forces, the army chief and other state institutions through coordinated social media activity, including the alleged use of bot networks.

During his televised address, the minister presented screenshots of alleged financial transactions, social media posts and WhatsApp conversations, which he said showed communication between the suspect and an Indian handler regarding payments, account details and the reach of online posts.

He further alleged that payments were deliberately kept small to avoid detection by financial monitoring systems and said authorities were now examining digital payment gateways.

Tarar also claimed that the suspect admitted much of the material he circulated related to the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), which the government has declared a proscribed organisation following its call for widespread protests in June.

The minister alleged there was an operational link between JAAC and India, describing the evidence as irrefutable, although the allegations presented in the statement have not been independently verified in the article.

He criticised the organisation for what he described as attempts to undermine Pakistan's position on Kashmir and questioned why it did not participate in the electoral process if it wished to represent public concerns.

Tarar concluded by saying that recent diplomatic developments and Pakistan's claimed successes against India had prompted hostile disinformation efforts, while asserting that the people of Azad Jammu and Kashmir had rejected JAAC's politics ahead of upcoming elections.
