Interior Secretary Doug Burgum declined multiple opportunities to explicitly condemn the white supremacist group Patriot Front during an interview on CNN's 'State of the Union' following the group's July 4 demonstration in Washington, D.C.

The rally featured hundreds of masked participants dressed in khaki clothing, carrying Confederate flags, and chanting slogans including 'Reclaim America.' CNN anchor Dana Bash repeatedly asked Burgum whether he condemned both the organization and its ideology.

Burgum responded that he did not agree with what the group stands for but emphasized that the United States protects freedom of speech, arguing that democracy allows people to express views that others may find offensive or reprehensible.Rather than issuing a direct condemnation, he repeatedly framed the issue as one involving constitutional free speech protections.

When Bash asked whether President Donald Trump should denounce Patriot Front, Burgum again avoided giving a direct answer, instead comparing the group's activities to other forms of political protest, including demonstrations in which participants express anti-American sentiments.

Bash noted that Patriot Front represents white nationalism and stressed the significance of such a demonstration taking place in the nation's capital on Independence Day.Burgum maintained that while many people may object to the group's message, the Constitution protects even offensive speech.
