Tadej Pogacar aims for fifth Tour de France title amid fierce competition
Mexican cyclist Isaac del Toro secured an impressive victory in Stage 2 of the 2026 Tour de France, winning the uphill finish at Montjuïc in Barcelona ahead of his UAE Team Emirates teammate and defending champion Tadej Pogačar.
The 22-year-old, riding in his first Tour de France after finishing runner-up at last year's Giro d'Italia, produced a strong ride on the final climb to earn one of the biggest victories of his young career.
Pogačar finished second, with Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel taking third, while overall race leader Jonas Vingegaard crossed the line in fourth to successfully retain the yellow jersey.Pogačar collected six bonus seconds at the finish, reducing his deficit to Vingegaard to just six seconds in the general classification.Evenepoel moved into third overall, while Del Toro climbed to fourth, 16 seconds behind the race leader.
The decisive action came after UAE Team Emirates increased the pace on the finishing circuits around Barcelona, steadily reducing the lead group before the final ascent of Montjuïc.
Del Toro launched his winning move with around 700 metres remaining, and Pogačar chose not to challenge his teammate, allowing the young Mexican to celebrate a landmark Tour stage victory.
Del Toro described the achievement as an emotional moment, saying it reflected the enormous effort required to reach the sport's highest level and expressing pride in representing Mexico.
Earlier in the stage, both Del Toro and French teenager Paul Seixas recovered from mechanical problems to rejoin the peloton before the decisive finale. An early three-rider breakaway was eventually caught with about 30 kilometres remaining, setting up the battle among the overall contenders.Pogačar later celebrated Del Toro's triumph by waving a Mexican flag after the finish.
