Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, the Republican nominee for U.S.Senate and a candidate endorsed by former President Donald Trump, challenged his Democratic opponent, Texas state Representative James Talarico, to participate in an unconventional debate at a barbecue restaurant.

The challenge appeared intended to question Talarico’s public claims about enjoying barbecue and came amid ongoing Republican attacks on his masculinity.

Rather than engaging with the lighthearted nature of the proposal, Talarico redirected attention to a controversial legal matter involving Paxton’s office.

Talarico stated that he would meet Paxton for a debate at any time and place if Paxton answered questions about a plea agreement offered to Adam Hoffman, a former Texas attorney accused of sexually abusing a young boy over several years.According to prior reporting cited in the article, Hoffman initially faced severe criminal charges that could have resulted in a life sentence.However, Paxton’s office reportedly offered a plea arrangement that would have reduced the case to misdemeanor convictions and minimal jail time.
