Jammu University directs comprehensive audit of libraries and digital resources to check separatist and anti-national content

The University of Jammu has issued a directive for a thorough audit and inspection of all its libraries, offices, and digital repositories. This step aims to ensure that no books or publications with anti-national, separatist, or objectionable content are present on the campus. As per the circular from the registrar, all departments must submit compliance reports. The university also plans to form a committee that will create a standard operating procedure for purchasing academic materials. This procedure will involve screening processes, periodic checks by academicians, and regular monitoring of websites and online resources.

This development comes shortly after protests by the Bharatiya Janata Party against certain books procured for government schools in Jammu and Kashmir. The party accused the National Conference-led administration of promoting what they termed as 'academic jihad'.

In response, two books titled 'Personalities and Legends of J&K' and 'Great Personalities of Jammu and Kashmir' were withdrawn from school libraries.Several officials were suspended and one contractual employee was terminated for including pro-separatist content. The police also registered a case under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act and arrested three publishers, who were later blacklisted. This is not the first instance of such actions in the region.Almost a year ago, the Lieutenant Governor had banned at least 25 books, including works by prominent authors like Arundhati Roy and AG Noorani.

The university's move reflects ongoing efforts to regulate academic content and maintain a secure educational environment in Jammu and Kashmir amid sensitive political issues. The initiative highlights the intersection of education policy, security concerns, and political debates in the Union Territory.

Stakeholders hope that this audit will help balance academic freedom with national integrity without unduly restricting access to legitimate scholarly materials.
