Jakub Mensik struggles physically after five-set victory at Roland-Garros
Formidable Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner was unexpectedly knocked out of the French Open in the second round after a grueling match against Argentina's Juan Manuel Cerundolo.Ranked 56th in the world, Cerundolo staged a remarkable comeback, defeating Sinner 3-6, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1, 6-1.The match was heavily influenced by extreme heat, with temperatures rising from 29°C to 32°C.
Sinner, who had been on a 30-match winning streak and was considered a strong favourite to secure his first career Grand Slam, visibly struggled on court, often bending over in exhaustion and resorting to short points, drop shots, and serve-and-volley tactics to cope with the conditions. He even attempted to cool himself using a hand-held fan and ice packs.
The turning point came when Sinner served for the match at 5-4 in the third set but was unable to close it out, seeking medical attention and leaving the court before resuming with limited success. This loss marks Sinner's first defeat since February and ends his impressive winning streak.
The match also echoes previous challenges he faced under high temperatures at other tournaments, highlighting heat as a significant factor in his performance.
